Fragrance Notes and Hints: How to Understand the World of Perfume?

Perfumes are a way to express personality, mood and style. But how do you choose the right perfume for you? And what are the factors that determine the quality, durability and uniqueness of a perfume? In this article, we will learn about the concept of notes and aromatic hints, and how they affect the experience of smelling and enjoying a perfume.

What are the aromatic notes?

Fragrance notes are the individual components that make up the finished fragrance. These notes are divided into three distinct elements: top, middle, and base notes. Each element plays a different role in building the fragrance and bringing out its spirit and essence.

  • Top Notes: These are the first scents that reach your nose when you spray a perfume. They are light and fresh and fade quickly. They last for about 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Middle notes (heart): This is the main scent of the perfume that appears after the top notes evaporate. It is more stable and concentrated and lasts for approximately two to four hours.
  • Base Notes: The final, deepest, richest scent in a fragrance. They appear after the middle notes fade and last for six hours or more.

The difference in the scent of a perfume over time is due to the fact that each aromatic substance has different volatile properties. Some components volatilize quickly and others slowly, which changes the composition and scent of the perfume. Top notes are volatile substances that dominate the introduction of the perfume due to the lightness of their molecules, while the heart notes are less volatile, but not like the base notes that remain until the end of the day due to the weight of their molecules.
